Have you ever tried lake swimming at night in summer? When water has higher temperature than air. You’re surrounded by the sounds of frogs and fish splashing the water; by the smell of barbeques, lake algae and wet pier wood planks; by the lights of distant campfires and meteor showers. The only downside is the mosquitos’ bites, but let’s not spoil this image. If you’ve ever had a chance to do it, bring this memory to your mind and imagine you’re there. You can feel, smell, see all these things. Bring all those memories back. Make it your safe space where you can escape whenever you’re struggling.
You can help yourself visualise it by for example touching some sand with your feet (sandpit on a busy playground?) and imagining it’s the lovely soft bottom of the lake. What works for me is the smell of tomatoes (I eat tones in summer), I even took a piece of tomato stem to hospital when I was giving birth (hypnobirthing rules!), and it worked as an anchor, that instantly brought me back to my safe space whenever I needed to.
If you haven’t tried it yet, do it when you have a chance. You won’t regret it.
